Granite countertops are an investment that can increase the value of your home. However, poorly cared for countertops can impact the overall appearance of your kitchen. To help you keep your countertops in the best condition possible, here are some tips for caring for them.

Seal the Surface

Even if your granite countertop had a sealant applied to the surface when it was installed, it can fade over time. When the seal is gone, oils, liquids, and other substances can get into the pores of the granite and cause stains. Once this occurs, it will be difficult to remove the stain.

To prevent stains, check your granite's surface periodically to ensure that the seal is still intact. A simple way to do this is to place a few drops of water on the countertop. If the water is soaked in within a few minutes, it is time to reseal the countertop.

Look for a sealant that is specially designed for granite. To simplify the process, opt for a sealant that involves simply wiping on the sealant and then wiping it off after a period of time. It is important that you completely remove the residue from the sealant before it complexly dries.

Clean Spills Immediately

Even though the sealant is applied to the countertop, there is no 100 percent guarantee that your countertop will be protected from stains. The sealant works to slow the rate at which your granite will absorb substances. The quicker a spill is cleaned, the less likely it is that it will be absorbed by the granite and cause a stain.

In addition to wiping up spills immediately, you should clean the surface with a granite countertop cleaner. Use a soft cloth or sponge to apply it. The cleaner helps to effectively get up the substance, but also is less damaging to the seal.

Avoid using dishwasher detergent on the countertop. The detergent can cause a buildup on the surface. When this happens, your countertop can be dulled. You also need to avoid using bleach, ammonia, or other common cleaners because they can sometimes be abrasive and lead to degradation of the countertop.

Caring for your granite countertop can take time to learn, but it is worth it. By properly caring for the countertops, you can extend their lifespan and also protect your investment. Consult with a pro to learn other ways you can care for your countertops.
